Grace hawkins, Fence and Flora for Swannee, 2025
cotton, polyester blend and wood
75 x 105 cm
The 'Fence and Flora for Swannee' is the first in my series of quilts inspired by my local graffitti, and features tags from two local artists, Fence and Flora. The balloon children are the same tags as 'Fence for Lu', and the bugs are a tag that was once on my building, but was painted over by the landlord. I hope for this quilt series to highlight the unique visual language of these artists, and to recontextualise an art form which is often seen as in opposition to what one might call "high society", which in turn is associated with womens-work and fibre art. The works are designed to be hung in homes, as fan merch for these artists and neighbourhoods I love.
